Transit Data 2024

Tara Saeidi attended and presented her paper “Estimating Transit Passenger Alighting Counts by Optimizing Symmetry through a Double DQN Clustering Framework” at Transit Data 2024: The 9th International Workshop and Symposium on Research and Applications on the Use of Passive Data from Public Transport, which took place from July 1-4, 2024 in London, UK, at UCL and Transport for London!

2024 CARSP Conference

Homa Motavallian Naeini, Ph.D. Candidate was part of the organizing committee for the 2024 CARSP Conference which took place June 16-19, 2024, in Ottawa, Canada.  The theme of this year’s conference was “Safe Mobility: Achieving Vision Zero in Urban and Rural Environments”

Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2024

UMTIG was pleased to be represented at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington, DC which took place January 7–11, 2024 by Phani Kumar Patnala, Maryam Ghaffari Dolama, Michael Olfert, Navoda Rillagodage, Babak Mehran, and Jonathan Regehr.

Navoda Rillagodage presented a poster ‘A Binary Logit Model to Assess Safe Speed for Trucks in Adverse Road-Weather Conditions’ co-authored by Homa Motavallian Naeini.   Maryam Ghaffari Dolama was awarded the 2024 Art Worth Railway Engineering Conference Award, annually funded award at the University of Manitoba to provide travel support to students interested in pursuing a career in the railway industry to attend annual engineering conferences.   Maryam used this award to attend the TRB Annual Meeting where she presented a poster and represented UMTIG as a member of the Highway/Rail Grade Crossing Committee.

Congratulations to Julian Carneiro on Successful Defense of Master’s Thesis

On December 18, 2023, Julian Carneiro successfully defended his M.Sc. thesis entitled “Applying Signal Processing Techniques to Characterize Rail Corrugation, Noise, and Vibration”. Dr. Ian Jeffrey and Dr. Jonathan Regehr co-supervised Julian’s research. A special thanks to Dr. Sherif Sherif and Dr. Babak Mehran for serving on the Examining Committee. Julian’s research was generously supported by the National Research Council of Canada and Advanced Rail Management (Canada).

Congratulations, Julian!

Reimagining Arctic and Central Canada Accessibility through Hudson Bay

Dr. Regehr was one of 22 co-Principal Investigators for a major multidisciplinary proposal, entitled Reimagining Arctic and Central Canada Accessibility through Hudson Bay, submitted to the New Frontiers in Research Fund – Transformation stream. Having been invited to submit a full proposal based on a successful Letter of Intent, Dr. Regehr led a team of 10 civil engineering co-applicants—including 9 from the University of Manitoba—tasked with assessing the feasibility of resilient land-based (i.e., rail) connectivity to the Port of Churchill. Dr. Regehr was the primary civil engineering contributor to the proposal. In this role, he participated in group ideation sessions, coordinated tasks within the civil engineering team (including those related to transportation, climate change, hydrology, ice engineering, hydraulics, and structural engineering), developed research plans and budgets, and ensured cohesion with other disciplines (especially the planned collaborations with researchers from CEOS and the Transport Institute, and industry partners representing the Town of Churchill and the Arctic Gateway Group). Unfortunately, we learned in December that the proposal was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, UMTIG sees many opportunities for future research collaborations because of this effort.

Manitoba Highway Traffic Information System (MHTIS)

In February 2024, the agreement for the Manitoba Highway Traffic Information System (MHTIS), a partnership between Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) and the Urban Mobility and Transportation Informatics Group (UMTIG) at the University of Manitoba, was renewed.

MHTIS is planned, designed, implemented, and operated by graduate students and associates of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, working with Dr. Jonathan Regehr, P. Eng. and Dr. Babak Mehran, P.Eng. Raw data concerning traffic on Manitoba highways is provided by Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure. The data is processed, analyzed, summarized and disseminated by MHTIS in accordance with established procedures. This partnership leverages the strengths and expertise of both institutions to provide valuable insights and data on traffic patterns across Manitoba’s highways.

More information can be found at the following:  About Manitoba Highway Traffic Information System (MHTIS) | Transportation and Infrastructure | Province of Manitoba

Dr. Moataz Mohamed’s invited lecture at UMTIG

Dr. Moataz Mohamed was invited to give UMTIG members a lecture about his research group’s research topics. Dr. Mohamed’s research focus is on sustainable transportation systems, specially public transportation. Additionally, his research delves into the systemic effects of the transit system on the utility grid and energy demand. You can find more about Dr. Mohamed’s work at his personal website (Link).

UMTIG Gathering

On January 18th, the UMTIG team came together to celebrate a remarkable year of accomplishments, growth, and collaboration. Held at Dakota Lanes, the event was a vibrant reminder of the dedication and passion that fuels our group.

Colleagues enjoyed the event filled with laughter, good food, and heartfelt recognition of everyone’s contributions.
