Dr. Regehr was one of 22 co-Principal Investigators for a major multidisciplinary proposal, entitled Reimagining Arctic and Central Canada Accessibility through Hudson Bay, submitted to the New Frontiers in Research Fund – Transformation stream. Having been invited to submit a full proposal based on a successful Letter of Intent, Dr. Regehr led a team of 10 civil engineering co-applicants—including 9 from the University of Manitoba—tasked with assessing the feasibility of resilient land-based (i.e., rail) connectivity to the Port of Churchill. Dr. Regehr was the primary civil engineering contributor to the proposal. In this role, he participated in group ideation sessions, coordinated tasks within the civil engineering team (including those related to transportation, climate change, hydrology, ice engineering, hydraulics, and structural engineering), developed research plans and budgets, and ensured cohesion with other disciplines (especially the planned collaborations with researchers from CEOS and the Transport Institute, and industry partners representing the Town of Churchill and the Arctic Gateway Group). Unfortunately, we learned in December that the proposal was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, UMTIG sees many opportunities for future research collaborations because of this effort.
